Venuezi receives over $2 million in booking requests in 2 days

Revolutionary hospitality website Venuezi.com attracted $2.5 million worth of wedding and hen’s party enquiries in two days from presenting at Brisbane’s Sofitel Wedding Expo.Venuezi (pronounced Venue Easy) allows people to submit their function or event request and receive quotes from venues for free. Launched in late 2011, the site has been gaining the interest of major hospitality operators and the public since.

Managing Director Jason Titman said: “The interest from the public has been phenomenal. Coinciding with our participation in the Sofitel Wedding Expo there was $2 million in wedding enquiries posted on the website in just two days. Our problem at the moment is that we can’t sign venues up quickly enough to support the demand from the public.”

Venuezi’s founders are adamant the current process of booking functions and events is antiquated and with strong demand for new online models, they knew there had to be an easier way to book functions. Designed by leading hospitality industry operators, Venuezi.com is transforming how people book their functions and events.

The site allows members who are planning a function to list their requirements on the site for free. Partner venues pay a monthly access fee to quote on these function requests. Members then pick the quote that suits their requirements and book the function directly with the venue. The site is big on protecting user privacy and member contact details are not released to any venue unless they actually proceed with a quote.

• Chasing up their enquiry

Sydney designer Alex Lehours releases limited edition t-shirt

Ahead of a busy street art and design schedule in 2012, up-and-coming Sydney artist Alex Lehours has released a limited edition t-shirt available to the public. The one-off t-shirt is based on his signature ‘100% Minty Fresh’ artwork.

Alex knows a thing or two about t-shirts. His designs were recently showcased in the ‘NEXT’ t-shirt design section of Cockatoo Island’s OUTPOST ‘Art from the streets’ exhibition, and his ‘Paint the Town Red’ design was selected from hundreds of entries by Australian hip hop group Thundamentals as their official t-shirt for their national tour.

Alex said: “My inspiration comes from pop art, comics, pin-ups, and mixing vintage with a contemporary edge. My art also has a lot of dark, twisted, quirky humour. This limited edition t-shirt combines a unique design with that dark, but subtle, humour.”

Regarded by himself as a freshman to the commercial art scene, Alex is an artist with no boundaries. His work is a combination of the past and present. Pen, pencil, ink and water colour frequently appear in Alex's work, however he is constantly exploring new mediums and avenues for all of his pieces.

Alex has worked on numerous international and domestic projects including work for FBI Radio, The Australian Museum's Jurassic Lounge, Primo Magazine, The Pin Up Parlour, and ING Direct. He was also a contestant in the 2011 Secret Wars Sydney Series.

Commonwealth champ Dominic Vea to face Shane Cameron on Green undercard

Commonwealth cruiserweight champion Dominic Vea (AUS) will defend his belt against former heavyweight Shane Cameron (NZ) in the headline bout on the Danny Green vs Antonio Tarver undercard on 20 July in Sydney.

Vea (13-2, 10KO) is expecting a tough fight against Cameron, but acknowledges the New Zealander is still adjusting to his recent move down to cruiserweight.

Dominic says, “I’ve watched a lot of tape of Cameron at heavyweight and cruiserweight. He’s got decent speed but it’s a new ball game for him after only one fight at the true cruiserweight limit. He will struggle against a fighter of my calibre.”

This will be the Commonwealth champion’s first fight in a year. His last hit-out was a bruising encounter in July 2010, when Vea claimed the Commonwealth title despite entering the ring with a broken nose.

“Time out of the ring has really freshened me up,” says Vea. “It feels great to be injury-free and training intensely again.”

Vea’s training regime now includes daily morning sessions with renowned trainer Ray Kelly before another two hours each afternoon at Core Strength Gym Mt Druitt.

Simon Bernhardt exhibiting new prints from Polaroid photography project

Sydney photographer Simon Bernhardt will be exhibiting enlarged prints from his Polaroid photography project ‘Polaroid Holiday’ at Paddington’s Global Gallery from 13 April to 1 May.

Simon’s collection of Polaroid photos showcases his love affair with photography, the natural and built environments, and his interest in Polaroid cameras. This fourth exhibition, this time combined with other Australian artists, will again present Polaroid photography as a valid medium as it is often dismissed as merely a ‘fun, adolescent’ format.

Simon will be discussing his Polaroid art and signing copies of his self-published book Polaroid Holiday at the gallery’s ‘Meet the Artist’ session from 2pm on Saturday 30 April.

“Polaroid cameras conjure up distant memories of poorly focused banal happy snaps of slightly inebriated relatives in silly hats at family celebrations or while on holidays, but emphatically not leading edge creativity,” Simon enthuses.

In 2002, with the rise of digital photography, Simon sensed that the format would disappear so he bought close to one hundred boxes of Polaroid film. Intrigued by the format since he first experimented with it, he tinkered with the camera itself to ensure the best quality print.

“Polaroid was the first instant gratification photography. You didn’t have to wait for your parents to pick-up the film. I found this aspect of Polaroid photography really interesting,” says the Stanmore local.

Sydney photographer Simon Bernhardt will be exhibiting his Polaroid photography project ‘Polaroid Holiday’ at Paddington’s Blender Gallery from November 23-30.

Simon’s collection of Polaroid photos will showcase his love affair with photography, the natural and built environments, and his interest in Polaroid cameras. The exhibition is set to challenge the artistic community’s thoughts on Polaroid photography as a valid medium, often dismissed as merely a ‘fun, adolescent’ format.

In 2002, with the rise of digital photography, Simon sensed that the format would disappear so he bought close to one hundred boxes of Polaroid film. Intrigued by the format since he first experimented with it, he tinkered with the camera itself to ensure the best quality print.

“I removed the plastic lens and replaced it with glass,” explains Simon. “I covered the case’s tiny gaps with black tape to prevent even the tiniest amount of light prematurely exposing the film. I’ve even used a tripod and spirit level to get the most from my shots.”

The exhibition’s opening night will also be the launch his self-published book featuring selected prints from his ‘Polaroid Holiday’ project.

Commonwealth champ Dominic Vea chasing a shot at Danny Green

Commonwealth Cruiserweight champion Dominic Vea is back in Sydney after touring the USA and is chasing a shot at Danny Green after the Perth boxer’s most recent farcical bout.

“Danny claims he’s a ‘fighter’ but I don’t see him taking on any young Aussie fighters,” says Vea. “I’ve been an Australian and regional champion, and am currently the Commonwealth champ. My credentials are there for Danny to promote me as a worthy opponent.”

There is enough history between Vea (13-2, 10KO) and Green to fuel a brutal encounter deluded fight fans need to see. In April, Green broke Vea’s nose in a sparring session just days before his bout with Anthony McCracken. Vea went on to lose to McCracken by split decision in a bloody encounter. His nose not fully recovered, Vea fought another bloody war to claim the Commonwealth title.

“I’m after a bit of payback for the broken nose which cost me two regional belts. I’ve gone the distance twice without being able to breathe properly - that’s what being a ‘fighter’ is. I’m keen to show Danny what the word means,” says Vea.

While in the USA, Dom visited a number of gyms including Justin Fortune’s Fortune Gym. Watching the elite train validated Vea’s current regime and left him hungrier than ever. Fortune himself commented that Dom has what it takes to knock Green over.

Vea’s manager Justin Clenshaw says, “Australian boxing lacks success because of a lack of household names. How can fighters become known when guys like Danny Green are picking foreigners or retired boxers? Danny Green has the chance to give opportunities to Aussie fighters and grow Aussie boxing. Why even consider guys like Shane Cameron only to help New Zealand boxing to the detriment of our local talent?”

Commonwealth Champion Dominic Vea can’t believe the Green v Briggs farce

Dominic Vea, the recently crowned Commonwealth Cruiserweight champion, is in disbelief at the contrast between what he went through to achieve his belt and what was served up as a ‘world title’ fight last night.

Vea, whose nose was broken by Danny Green in a sparring session leading up to his recent Commonwealth title fight, says “three weeks ago I continued fighting after my nose was re-broken in the first round. I fought for my life over 12 rounds to bring the Commonwealth Title to Australia - that is what boxing should be about, not what boxing fans saw last night.”

“Like Anthony Mundine, Danny is in a position to deliver Australian boxing from the sporting wilderness. Those in that position need to respect it.”

Vea believes it was a classic example of a fight that shouldn’t have happened. “The NSW Combat Sports Authority made the right decision. The WA commission has a lot to answer for.”

“I’ve been in the ring with Danny many times and there is good reason why he is so careful with the opponents he selects. There is a big difference between fighting old, unfit, guys who did their best work in lighter divisions, to fighting young, hungry fighters like me,” says Vea.

“One thing that Paul Briggs did illustrate is how much of a fine line there is between being a force and being irrelevant. Green, as the promoter and match-maker, has to share in some of the responsibility for the outcome. He is, after all, the one banking the proceeds.”

Dominic ‘The Dominator’ Vea (12-2,10KO) now faces New Zealand’s Oscar Siale (12-4,4KO) for the vacant Commonwealth cruiserweight title after WBO African champion Mohammed Azzaoui withdrew on short notice.

“It’s a bit disappointing that Azzaoui pulled out,” says Vea. “However Siale is an experienced southpaw with plenty of rounds under his belt. My management have done a great job over the past year dealing with potential opponents and the Commonwealth Boxing Council to secure this title fight. I’m just glad I’m finally getting in the ring on Thursday - it has been a while coming.”

Penrith Panthers Rugby League Club will host the Commonwealth Cruiserweight title fight and undercard on Thursday 1 July.

Dominic played junior Rugby League with Penrith and Vea will be linking to the Penrith Panthers through a promotional sparring session with Panthers star fullback Lachlan Coote at midday on Wednesday 30 June.

Penrith Panthers star fullback Lachlan Coote will be giving away size and reach when he jumps in the ring for a promotional sparring session against 90kg cruiserweight boxer, and former junior Panther, Dominic Vea on Wednesday 30 June.

Vea (12-2,10KO) enters the ring against the current WBO African Champion Mohamed Azzaoui (25-5-2,8KO) on Thursday 1 July, at Penrith Panthers Rugby League Club for a shot at the vacant Commonwealth cruiserweight boxing title.

Holding the Commonwealth title bout at Panthers is somewhat of a homecoming for Vea. Dominic was a former Penrith Junior Rugby League player, playing for the Penrith Panthers U/18s in 1999 and the Windsor Wolves Jim Beam Premiership winning team of 2005.

Dominic hopes the Panthers fraternity and wider Penrith community will be in his corner on July 1st. “I’ll test his fitness but will go easy on Lachlan – I want the Panthers to continue their good form,” says Dom.

The Vea v Azzaoui Commonwealth title fight and undercard will be televised live on Fox Sports 3.

Dominic Vea to contest Commonwealth Title Fight in Penrith July 1

Western Sydney will host the Commonwealth Cruiserweight title on Thursday 1 July, when Blacktown boxer Dominic ‘The Dominator’ Vea (12-2,10KO) enters the ring against the current WBO African Champion Mohamed Azzaoui (25-5-2,8KO) at Penrith Panthers Rugby League Club.

Dominic says, “I’m fit, focused, and have upped the ante in training this past week. Azzaoui is a respected boxer who has competed at the highest levels. There’s no way I’m taking this fight lightly.”

Dominic’s last hit-out was a gruelling eight round encounter that resulted in a split decision loss against Anthony McCracken. That bout demonstrated Dominic’s never say die attitude and ability to fight through the pain barrier – he entered the ring with a broken nose courtesy of an intense sparring session with Danny Green.

Head Trainer Dylan Nye says, “Dominic is in good form. He went the distance with a broken nose last time around so being 100% fit this time means he will be even more devastating.”

“Making his fight happen has taken almost twelve months with countless hours of negotiation with former champion Robert Norton, potential opponents, and the Commonwealth Boxing Council,” says Dominic’s Manager Justin Clenshaw. “The Commonwealth title is an ‘old school’ title that leads directly to world championship opportunities. With just over a week to go until his first bout in 8 months, Dominic Vea, is back in Sydney after joining Danny Green’s promotional tour to Melbourne. The Melbourne tour involved daily work-outs and sparring sessions against Green.

Vea (12-1, 10KO), the current OPBF and WBO Oriental cruiserweight title-holder, faces Anthony McCracken (11-4, 4KO) on 8 April. ‘The Dominator’ is primed and ready to rumble against a respected opponent.

Dominic says, “the trip to Melbourne with Danny was excellent preparation. It was great to spend four intense days training and sparring against him. His team is very professional and I learnt a lot from touring with them. With just over a week to go until my bout against McCracken I’m in good form and can’t wait to get in the ring.”

Vea has one more session with Green on Thursday before beginning his final week of preparation at Mt Druitt’s Core Strength Gym.

A late venue change sees the event, which also features Jamie Pittman, Michael Bolling and Billy Dib move from Star City Casino to Le Montage Function Centre, 38 Frazer St, Lilyfield.

This week and next, Australia’s No. 2 ranked cruiserweight boxer Dominic Vea takes his preparation for his next fight up a notch, when he spars Australia’s No.1 ranked cruiserweight, Danny Green.

28 year-old Vea (12-1, 10KO), the current OPBF and WBO Oriental cruiserweight title-holder, faces Anthony McCracken (11-4, 4KO) on 8 April at Sydney’s Star City Casino, while Danny Green (28-3, 25KO) defends his IBO Cruiserweight title against Puerto Rican Manny Siaca (22-6, 19KO) on 14 April in Perth.

Last year, Green selected Vea as a sparring partner in preparation for his IBO title bout with Julio Cesar Dominguez. Now Australia’s top cruiserweights both stand to gain from giving each other the best preparation possible.

Dominic says, “Sparring with Danny is great training heading into this fight and will fine-tune my preparation. Danny is a recognised champion who will test me over the next fortnight. It is great that with big fights just around the corner, both of us can gain from these sessions.”

Current OPBF and WBO Oriental cruiserweight title-holder Dominic Vea (12-1, 10KO) returns to the ring on Thursday 8 April at Sydney’s Star City Casino against Wagga-based boxer Anthony McCracken (11-4, 4KO).

McCracken is a quality opponent – their previous match-up last July is regarded as one of 2009’s most brutal, with Vea producing a scintillating 7th round KO victory. Vea expects a strong challenge ahead of a confirmed Commonwealth cruiserweight title shot against Britain’s Rob Norton (32-4-2, 19KO) on 1 July in Sydney.

Dominic says, “I’m looking forward to facing McCracken again. He is a quality opponent and is definitely no roll-over. Although I’m excited about fighting for the Commonwealth title, I am only focusing on McCracken at the moment.”

Vea has been training intensely since December, primarily focusing on gaining extra power. Dominic and his trainers believe that he has developed a 30% increase in punching power. Dylan Nye, Head Trainer at My Druitt’s Core Strength Gym says, “We already know that Dom is a devastating puncher whose precise body shots have broken his last four opponent’s ribs. He had a strong hit-out against McCracken last year so we anticipate another great performance.”

Dominic has been chasing a shot at the Commonwealth title for the past twelve months. The title bout will be staged in Western Sydney, where Dominic enjoys hometown support. Regardless of the outcome against McCracken, Vea’s Commonwealth title bout will go ahead in July.

Solomon Haumono joins cousin Dominic Vea with OPBF title belt

Solomon Haumono’s recent tenth round stoppage of Michael Kirby in Queensland ensured that he won’t be outdone by his younger cousin and fellow pugilist Dominic Vea when it comes to title belts.

Haumono’s win rewarded him with the OPBF’s heavyweight belt, but Vea, a cruiserweight, still has bragging rights - he picked up his OPBF Cruiserweight title much earlier in 2007.

First cousins Haumono (17-1-1, 15KO) and Vea (12-1, 10KO) join light heavyweight Tim Bell as Australia’s only Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation title holders. The OPBF title is a highly prized Asia-Pacific regional belt.

Vea and Haumono are the family’s second generation boxers. Two uncles, Fine and Sione, also had distinguished careers in the ring. Fine Sani Vea, won boxing gold at the Brisbane 1982 Commonwealth Games and went on to the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, while Sione Sani Vea fought Tony Mundine on two occasions.

Vea, who defended his OPBF title and claimed the WBO Oriental cruiserweight belt in August is taking a much deserved break and will be back in action early next year.

“Sol has worked hard to win this belt and get where he is, so I’d like to congratulate him on a job well done. It’s nice having two title holders in the family! ” says Dominic, who trains out of Mt Druitt’s Core Strength Gym.
